Federal Veterans Initiatives

Corporation for National and Community Service
United We Serve Veterans and Military Families Initiative—The Corporation-managed website Serve.gov highlights service opportunities and initiatives aimed at ameliorating the effects of the recent economic downturn. The “Veterans and Military Families Initiative” highlights national service efforts focused specifically on the needs of current and former servicemen and women and their families.
Veterans Corps—The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act of 2009 authorized the Corporation to establish a Veterans Corps under AmeriCorps to engage more veterans in service and to help put their skills to work to address the pressing needs of local communities. This page on the Corporation’s website provides background information on the Corps and spotlights specific implementations and pilot programs.

Directory of Veterans Service Organizations—The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs maintains this list of both congressionally chartered and non-chartered veteran-serving organizations, which can refer you to chapters in your area.
National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs—The website of this national organization provides links to state veterans affairs offices.
National Guard Unit Finder—This online tool helps you identify Army and Air National Guard units and offices in your city or region.
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Facility Locator—Use this online tool to find federal Veterans Affairs hospitals, clinics, and benefits offices.

MilitaryHOMEFRONT—This Department of Defense website offers a search tool that lets you look up military installations in your state and region and the programs and resources they offer to service members and their families.
National Military Family Association—This nonprofit serves the families of the seven uniformed services through education, information, and advocacy.

These organizations may help you identify and communicate with veterans on college and university campuses.
CampusVeterans.com—This organization maintains a list of veterans organizations on college campuses. Although not exhaustive, it identifies and provides links to known organizations in many states.
Campus Compact—This organization is a coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents dedicated to promoting community service, civic engagement, and service-learning in higher education. It has had a long partnership with AmeriCorps VISTA. If your state has a Compact, you can seek them out for ideas, contacts, and resources for engaging veterans in service.
