Teaming Up to Serve Veterans and Military Families
A Resource for State Service Commissions

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS or the Corporation) has placed a high priority on utilizing service to meet the needs of veterans and military families. We also seek to engage veterans themselves in service to others. This goal has taken on added importance with President Barack Obama’s United We Serve initiative and with the passage of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act.
AmeriCorps is uniquely situated to work with and for our nation’s current and former servicemen, servicewomen and their families. This toolkit is designed to help State Commissions tap into the time, talents, and energies of veterans and to partner with organizations that serve veterans and military families. In the toolkit, you’ll find the following information and materials:
- An overview of why and how Commissions should engage veterans, military families, and veteran-serving organizations in national service
- Descriptions of national CNCS veterans initiatives
- Descriptions of successful state and local programs that can serve as models
- An in-depth look at how one state organizes its program
- Tips and guidance from Commissions and grantees working with veterans
- Actions Commissions can take to initiate and sustain veteran-serving programs
- Resources to help Commissions and other national service staff and partners reach out to veterans and veteran-serving organizations
