T/TA Focus: Educational Success and Mentoring

LEARNS is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service to provide training and technical assistance to projects focused on literacy, education, mentoring, and out-of-school time. LEARNS is a partnership of the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL) and the Bank Street College of Education (BSC). The Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory has a 33-year history of providing research, development, and training and technical assistance to schools and community-based agencies. The Bank Street College of Education, founded in 1916, is a recognized leader in early childhood education, a pioneer in improving the quality of classroom teaching, and a national advocate for children and families.


Services and Resources Available

Telephone and Online Assistance
Offer technical assistance via toll-free telephone lines and electronic mail.

The Tutor
Produced three times a year in downloadable and print versions on specific topics of need or interest to tutoring, mentoring, literacy, or out-of-school time programs.

National Institutes
For programs engaged in mentoring and education success, one- to two-day institutes provide project staff with training and peer exchange, supporting the development of strong programs and effective members and volunteers.

On-Site Training Assistance
Conduct limited on-site training assistance in response to cluster, state commission, and multi-program requests.

Web-Based Tutor Training
An interactive web site to prepare tutors of elementary students in reading and homework help.

LEARNS Literacy Assessment Profile (LLAP)
Enable tutors to observe strategies children use to read and write, and help project directors capture data that can be aggregated for program evaluation and reporting purposes.
