Abstract:
Summarizes and reflects on the experiences of 55 informal businesspeople who are African American and live in Chicago or Baltimore. Informal businesses are small-scale and do not meet all legal requirements, such as having a business license or paying taxes. Examines their attitudes and behaviors in regards to informal work, and explores the appealing aspects of working informally that may discourage people from formalizing their enterprises. Includes an informal economy interview guide.
