Developing a training calendar and newsletter

Abstract

The Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism in Maryland distributes a "Training Brief" with professional development and training events occurring in the state. The newsletter is faxed and e-mailed to AmeriCorps programs, InterCorps Council participants, volunteer coordinators, and commissioners. The newsletter helps funnel information about training opportunities to individuals who may otherwise not know about them.

Issue

Across the state, there were many training events happening each month that would be beneficial to the AmeriCorps programs but weren't advertised to them or sponsored by a Corporation for National and Community Service provider. The state commission also serves the traditional volunteer field and wanted to communicate training opportunities to them as well.

Action

The state commission's training coordinator is responsible for putting together and distributing the Training Brief. Information to include in the newsletter is gathered from various online sources and everyone within the state commission funnels information about trainings to him.

The Training Briefs include training and technical assistance resources in the state, professional development opportunities, upcoming national conferences, and highlights one training provider each issue.

The newsletter is distributed from two to six times per year. It is distributed by batch fax and e-mail to to the AmeriCorps programs in the state, InterCorps Council members, the associations of volunteer coordinators, and state commission members. The key is distributing it to programs not funded by the commission.

Outcome
