Groundhog Job Shadow Day
Beginning with a nationwide kickoff in February, and continuing throughout the school year, students across America "shadow" workplace mentors as they go through a normal day on the job. The students get to see firsthand how the skills learned in school relate to the workplace.
Intergenerational Day
Creating an age-integrated community leads to a healthy community, where the strengths of one generation meet the needs of another. Connections are being made to combat the segregation of different generations.
Intergenerational Week
Encourages others to find the joy that comes from reaching across generations with mutual respect. Starts on the 3rd Sunday in May. Celebrated as a part of Older Americans Month.
International Children's Book Day
Celebrate on or around Hans Christian Andersen's birthday, April 2, to inspire a love of reading and to call attention to children's books.
International Volunteer Day
The United Nations General Assembly designates December 5 as an annual celebration of voluntary action by people, communities and governments of the world.
Join Hands Day
Brings youth and adults together on the first Saturday in May to improve their own communities. A benefit of the day comes through the friendships that will be made across generations. The new partnerships will be an important first step in bringing more young people into leadership roles in many organizations.
Kiwani's Read Around the World
Support materials for Read Around the World, a service day designed to encourage youth to read. A joint project of First Book, Points of Light, and Reading is Fundamental.
Make a Difference Day
Make A Difference Day is a unique program that inspires and rewards volunteers. Everyone who helps others on the fourth Saturday in October, and sends in an entry form, is eligible for an award and a $10,000 donation to a charitable cause.
Martin Luther King Jr.
Brief biography and links to other sites with information about the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Includes project tips, resources, and a downloadable toolkit to help you plan a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service event.
National Family Volunteer Day
Designed to showcase the benefits of families working together, introduce community service, and encourage those who haven't yet made the commitment to volunteer as a family, National Family Volunteer Day is held the Saturday before Thanksgiving and kicks off National Family Week.
National Mentoring Month
During National Mentoring Month, in January of each year, attention is focused on how mentoring benefits the child, adult and society as a whole. It is also a time to thank those mentors who are "everyday heroes" to their mentees and to encourage others to share the experience and become a mentor.
National Peer Helpers Day
The first Wednesday of Red Ribbon Week recognizes peer helpers and their advisors in their critical roles of creating positive and caring schools and communities. The National Peer Helpers Association asks peer helpers and their advisors to wear blue ribbons on this day to highlight their work.
National Public Lands Day
An annual event that brings volunteers together to improve the country's largest natural resource -- its public lands. The event involves thousands of volunteers in all 50 states, including national parks, monuments, wildlife refuges, forests, grasslands, marine sanctuaries, lakes, and reservoirs managed by government agencies, but belonging to everyone.
National Volunteer Week
National Volunteer Week encourages all Americans to commit themselves to do more through the many volunteer programs available in their communities, and to celebrate the invaluable service that volunteers do everyday. This site from Points of Light offers media tools, logos, project and recognition ideas, and recognition items to order.
National Youth Service Day
Sponsored by Youth Service America and supported by the White House Office of USA Freedom Corps, National Youth Service Day (NYSD) is the largest service event in the world. In 2004, National Youth Service Day will be April 16 - 18.
One Day's Pay
Observe September 11 as a national day of service, charity, and compassion in honor of the victims of the terrorist attacks on America.
Random Acts of Kindness Week
Teachers enjoy emphasizing kindness on Valentine's Day because kindness, by its very nature, includes everyone. We can remind students how great it feels to be remembered with a Valentine, and that each of their peers needs encouragement and connection with others.
Read Across America
The National Education Association sponsors this annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on or around the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
Youth Appreciation Week
The second full week in November, Optimist Clubs recognize local youth for their efforts in the arts, athletics, academics and community service work. Youth Appreciation Week projects are intended to make children feel important and highlight their positive contributions to society.
