Keyboard Shortcuts

For Windows
Increase productivity and prevent repetitive stress by using keyboard shortcuts! For many computer users, typing is less painful than using the mouse. Get in the habit of using shortcuts and your comfort and speed at the computer will increase.
The following shortcuts will work with most Windows programs. In the instructions below, the (+) character is not meant to be typed; it simply indicates that more than one key must be pressed at the same time.
Windows System Shortcuts
- Ctrl+F = Find
- Ctrl+Esc = Open Start menu
- Alt+Tab = Switch between open programs
- Alt+F4 = Quit program
- Alt+Spacebar = Display Shortcut Menu for active window
File Menu Shortcuts
- F1 = Help
- Ctrl+F = Find
- Ctrl+O = Open
- Ctrl+N = New Document
- Ctrl+S = Save
- Shift+Ctrl+S = Save as
- Ctrl+P = Print
- Crtl+W = Close
Edit Menu Shortcuts
- Ctrl+A = Select all
- Ctrl+C = Copy
- Ctrl+X = Cut
- Ctrl+V = Paste
- Ctrl+Z = Undo
Format Menu Shortcuts
- Ctrl+B = Bold
- Ctrl+U = Underline
- Ctrl+I = Italic
Microsoft Key Shortcuts
The Microsoft Key (looks like a waving flag) can be found in between the Ctrl and Alt keys on many Windows keyboards.
- Microsoft Key = Display start menu
- Microsoft Key+D = Minimize window and show desktop
- Microsoft Key+E = Open Explorer Window
- Microsoft Key+M = Minimize all open windows
- Microsoft Key+Shift+M = Restores all previously open windows to how they were before you Minimized them
- Microsoft Key+F1 = Displays Windows Help Menu
Other Shortcuts
- F1 = Help
- Print Screen Key = Capture screen image (more info on taking screenshots)
Mouse Keys
Move the pointer and click items on the screen without using your mouse. Activating Mouse Keys allows you to use the numeric keypad to navigate your computer. To enable Mouse Keys, select the Start Menu > Control Panel > Accessibility Options, then click on the Mouse tab. Click the Settings button to adjust the pointer speeds.
- 8 = Move up
- 2 = Move down
- 4 = Move left
- 6 = Move right
- 1, 3, 7, and 9 = Move diagonally
- 5 = Press mouse button
- 0 = Hold mouse button
- + (plus key) = Double-click
- Left Alt+Left Shift+Num Lock = Shortcut for Mouse Keys

The Command key (looks like a four leaf clover) is located immediately on either side of the space bar. On most keyboards it has a small Apple symbol on the left bottom corner. In the instructions below, the (+) character is not meant to be typed; it simply indicates that more than one key must be pressed at the same time.
File Menu Shortcuts
- Command+O = Open
- Command+N = New document
- Command+S = Save
- Shift+Command+S = Save as
- Command+P = Print
- Command+W = Close
- Option+Command+W = Close all windows
- Command+Delete = Move to trash
Edit Menu Shortcuts
- Command+F = Find
- Command+A = Select all
- Command+C = Copy
- Command+X = Cut
- Command+V = Paste
- Command+Z = Undo
- Command+B = Bold
- Command+U = Underline
- Command+I = Italic
Format Menu Shortcuts
- Command+B = Bold

- Command+1 = View as icons

Go Menu Shortcuts
- Command+[ = Back
- Command+] = Forward
- Shift+Command+C = Computer

Window Menu Shortcuts
- Command+M = Minimize window
- Option+Command+M = Minimize all windows
Other Shortcuts
- Command+? = Help
- Command+Shift+3 = Capture screen image
Mouse Keys
- Command+Option+8 = Turn zoom on or off
- Command+Option+ = = Zoom in
- Command+Option+ - = Zoom out
- Command+Option+Control+8 = Switch to white-on-black or black-on-white
- 8 = Move up
- 2 = Move down
- 4 = Move left
- 6 = Move right
- 1, 3, 7, and 9 = Move diagonally
- 5 = Press mouse button
- 0 = Hold mouse button
- . (period on keypad) = Release mouse button (after pressing 0)
- Press option key 5 times = Turn mouse keys off (this shortcut must first be enabled in the Universal Access pane.)
